MacBooster.gen

What it is

MacBooster.gen is a detection name for MacBooster, a Mac potentially unwanted program (PUP) promoted as a cleanup or speed-up tool. It often rides along with other installs and then pushes aggressive scans, pop-ups, and paid upgrades. Technical background and indicators are in our MacBooster overview for defenders.

What you may notice

  • Frequent scan alerts and paywall pop-ups

  • Claims of hundreds of “issues” that aren’t real risks

  • New login items and background updaters

  • Browser changes or extra add-ons you didn’t approve

How it gets in

  • Bundled with “free” apps and repacked installers

  • Deceptive ads and fake download buttons

  • Installers with pre-checked offers

Remove it now

  1. Uninstall MacBooster from Applications and remove related login items.

  2. Delete leftover launch agents, daemons, and profiles you don’t recognize.

  3. Reset browsers to default search and remove unknown extensions.

  4. Run a reputable anti-malware scan for macOS and reboot.

Prevent it

  • Download apps from official sources only.

  • During install, choose Custom and uncheck extra offers.

  • Keep macOS and browsers updated.

  • Be skeptical of tools that find huge “problems” and demand payment to fix them.
